Big Bear Community

A beautiful freshwater lake is close by and it has some of the best fishing around.  Big Bear Lake is Southern California’s largest recreational lake at seven miles long.  It is ranked as one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southern California as well.  With so many days of sunshine a year, you are bound to see people having fun on the lake either swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating and more! 
 
Big Bear is accessible by car and by air.  Big Bear Airport is a private airport in Big Bear City.  The airport has seen its fair share of excitement and use for rescues, medical evacuations and for firefighting.  Residents enjoy quiet nights however there is a lot of activity in the Winter months.  

The community of Big Bear has its history as an area called Pine Knot. As Pine Knot gradually grew in population, it got renamed to Big Bear and started to become bustling resort area starting back in the early part of the 1900's. There are now two world class ski areas in Big Bear.  There is Snow Summit and there is also Bear Mountain.  The Snow Summit Ski Resort opened in 1952 with the help of avid sportsman, Tommi Tyndall and his friends.  This resort was the first of its kind with the combination of newer chairlifts and snowmakers for the slopes. Bear Mountain is a sister resort of Snow Summit.  Together they have with 26 lifts that take you on more than 50 runs all over more than 400 acres.  There are two world class ski resorts in Big Bear, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain

It's not surprising that the most popular activities in Big Bear include snowboarding and skiing.  Big Bear is quite close to Big Bear Lake and residents and vacationers alike love to water ski on the waters!   Hiking is another fun pastime in Big Bear.
